Short film Warriors tackles child sex abuse

A short film being shot in the Hunter Valley tackles the subject of child sexual abuse.

Warriors was written by Lake Macquarie actress Emma Monk and Mulbring woman Shannon Walters, who also directs the film.

They have partnered with Newcastle-based production company True Beam to produce the film, which will be shot at various locations around the Hunter Region.

The film is centred around 11-year-old sexual abuse victim Jade played by Sydney actress Sassy Soupidis.

Ms Monk started writing the film about four years ago, and is excited and overwhelmed that it’s coming to fruition.

She also stars in the film as Jade’s teacher, Stephanie.

Ms Monk said got into acting to “tell other people’s unknown stories”.

She wants people who watch Warriors to feel empowered; to realise that sexual abuse can happen to anyone and to encourage victims to speak out and seek help.

“Hopefully it will relieve the shame or guilt around the issue,” she said.

Ms Walters said the film delivers a powerful message about a tough topic.

“The subject matter is a dark and bleak issue, but we tried to look at it from a point of empowerment,” she said.

“It’s something we all feel passionate about.

“Australians are keen to kick uncomfortable things under the rug, there’s a belief that it’s best not to get involved – what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.

“But (by speaking up) you could have the power to change someone’s life.”

Once Warriors is complete, the team will hit the international and Australian short film festival circuits, with a DVD to be released after the festivals.
